The overdose of a 16-year-old in Gwinnett County has led to the arrest of two teenagers. Dino Runar Bonasera, 17, is facing charges including felony murder, while a 16-year-old accomplice has also been arrested and charged as an adult. These arrests are part of Gwinnett County Police's efforts to address narcotics distribution, particularly fentanyl, according to a recent release from the Gwinnett County.
Despite the arrests and a reported 30% decrease in fatal overdoses this year, the fentanyl crisis remains a significant issue. The Narcotics Unit's approach to investigating overdose cases has resulted in a 60% increase in fentanyl-related arrests. "Austin’s Law," set to take effect this April, includes a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence for drug-related deaths and has already led to seven individuals being charged, as noted by the Gwinnett County. This legislation is named in memory of another victim of the epidemic.
Gwinnett County Police urge the public to seek immediate medical assistance for anyone experiencing an overdose, noting that good Samaritans are exempt from prosecution for drug offenses related solely to their request for help. They emphasize the need for awareness and prevention, encouraging adults to discuss the risks associated with narcotics and counterfeit prescription drugs with young people.
The Gwinnett County Narcotics Unit is seeking the public's assistance in addressing illegal drug activities in the community. A narcotics tip line has been established, and residents can call 770-513-5480 to report any suspected drug dealings.
