In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is stepping up its efforts to assist impacted residents in Pinellas County by deploying an additional mobile registration unit for the Operation Blue Roof program to St. Pete Beach. The mission is straightforward: to provide free temporary blue roof coverings for homeowners who have suffered roof damage from the recent storm, as per an announcement on Pinellas County's website.

From October 30 through November 1, the mobile unit will station itself at the beach access parking lot at 4700 Gulf Blvd, ready to aid local homeowners from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m; moreover, those unable to visit in person can still register online at BlueRoof.gov or by dialing 888-ROOF-BLU (888-766-3258), granting further access to those who may be navigating the labyrinth of recovery, the deadline to apply for the program has been extended to November 14.

The Operation Blue Roof initiative helps homeowners whose roofs have sustained less than 50 percent damage. However, it does not apply to vacation rental properties. Eligible roofing materials include standard shingles and similar types that can be easily secured. Materials like slate, asbestos, clay tile, and other difficult repair materials are excluded. For metal roofs and mobile homes, eligibility is decided on a case-by-case basis.

To ensure proper care for homes, Operation Blue Roof personnel will remove homeowner-installed tarps and minor debris to facilitate installations. However, homeowners must clear larger debris, like fallen trees, from their roofs to qualify for assistance.
