U.S. citizens seeking to renew their passports now have a more efficient path, as the Department of State has slashed the processing time and launched an online renewal option, KXAN reported Thursday. Previously, individuals faced a six to eight-week wait, now reduced to a window of four to six weeks for both online and paper applications, as per the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
For those in a rush, expedited services have been maintained at two to three weeks, allowing for quicker turnaround this comes as an expansion upon the measures introduced last month, when the department first made passport renewal fully available online, Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised the online system as "a significant step forward in ensuring that Americans can more easily access passport services" he said, acknowledging the efforts over the past year backed by Democrat lawmakers to alleviate backlogs and hasten processes through proposed legislation called the PASSPORT Act.
Eligibility for online renewal requires the applicant to be at least 25 years old and within the U.S. or its territories, as well as holding a passport book valid for 10 years, according to Community Impact. Certain conditions apply, including possession of a non-damaged passport and needing no immediate changes to personal details such as name or gender. Prospective travelers need to plan since the passport becomes invalid upon renewal application, making it unsuitable for immediate international trips.
"We continue to find ways to reduce administrative barriers and improve efficiency, equity and accessibility throughout the passport application process," Blinken stated, underscoring his department's commitment to modernizing how Americans engage with passport services he emphasized the aim to ensure a seamless process, stressing the ambition to polish the online system into the preferred tool for renewals.
