Shelby County residents planning to use driver service centers next week should be aware of pending temporary closures at two key locations. The Memphis/East Shelby Drive Driver Services and Reinstatement Center and the Bartlett Express Services Center are set for a one-day shutdown to upgrade critical systems, including the installation of new self-service kiosks. The information comes directly from an announcement by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.
The Memphis/East Shelby Drive location at 3200 East Shelby Drive will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and is scheduled to resume services the following day, as specified by the state department. In a similar vein, the Bartlett center, found at 6340 Summer Ave., will shutter its doors on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and will reopen to the public on Thursday, Oct. 10. These closures, though brief, are an essential step for bringing more efficient service to the community.
Upgrades to the centers include new credentialing equipment and advanced self-service kiosks that promise to streamline a number of Driver Services transactions. According to the state's official release, these self-service kiosks will afford users the convenience of renewing or replacing licenses or ID cards, updating addresses and emergency contact information, advancing Teen/Graduated Driver Licenses, and managing reinstatement fees and license reissues post-reinstatement.
Moreover, the new self-service kiosks are enabled to take photos and will accept varied forms of electronic payment including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and credit or debit cards. The advancements are part of a broader effort to modernize and expedite the customer service experience at driver services centers across the county. The introduction of such technology is reportedly aimed at reducing wait times and facilitating a quicker return to the road for drivers, thereby enhancing the systemic efficiency within the state’s framework of vehicular management.
