A Utah woman, overdue on a rock-hunting excursion along a perilous stretch of California's coastline, was airlifted to safety after a comprehensive search operation, as reported by ABC4. The woman, whose odyssey began after she left Ragged Point Inn on a quest for rocks, eventually found herself marooned on a rocky enclave at Kirk Creek.

The search was set in motion following a missing person's call received by the California Highway Patrol’s Coastal Division on Sunday, Sept. 29. Initial efforts were curbed by dense fog blanketing the closest airport, Paiso Robles Airport, which delayed aerial reconnaissance. According to ABC4, it wasn't until around 1:30 p.m. that the fog lifted sufficiently for the helicopter to take to the skies and spot the woman's vehicle near Kirk Creek Campground, some seven miles from her intended Willow Creek area.

In parallel, teams from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office scoured the adjacent roadways in their bid to locate the overdue hiker. Her plight was shared via a Facebook post by the California Highway Patrol's Coastal Division Air Operations, revealing that the terrestrial and airborne search parties had centered their efforts on shoreline areas once the fog relented. The woman's car was eventually found, nestled at a turnout near the campgrounds, directing the search party towards her last known whereabouts, as detailed by KSL Newsradio.

Rescue came roughly 25 hours after the woman, stricken upon the rocks and with time slipping away like the receding tide, found herself at the mercy of the landscape’s rugged embrace. The CHP helicopter crew, seizing a providential sandy ingress, descended 200 yards from her position. "The woman was assisted to the helicopter and flown back up to the roadway, where she was reunited with her husband," according to KUTV. She was transferred to an area hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, having endured more than a day isolated amidst the coastal wilderness.
