Last Saturday morning, I-780 in Vallejo was shattered by gunfire, resulting in injuries to an individual now recovering in a local hospital. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) moved quickly to address the incident dispatching officers from the Solano Area office after a 911 call at around 5:30 a.m. According to the CHP Golden Gate Division, the victim managed to pull their vehicle over and seek emergency assistance following the shooting.
The CHP Golden Gate Division's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) took the helm of the investigation, piecing together the events that occurred on that stretch of freeway near Glencove Road. The SIU acquired a description of the suspect vehicle, an action that bore fruit; the car was subsequently spotted on a Flock Safety camera, aiding in the identification and apprehension of the suspect, Mohamed Ahmed Rafel Ali, 40, of Richmond, without further conflict at his residence, according to the CHP’s Golden Gate Division.
Ali now faces serious charges, including attempted murder, which followed his capture at roughly 5 p.m. the same day of the incident. The charges, which also include assault with a deadly weapon and firing at an occupied vehicle, come after quick investigative work and possibly vital camera surveillance technology. Ali was later booked into the Solano County Jail, with the process highlighting the effectiveness of coordination between multiple CHP divisions.
