Residents of Anacortes and the San Juan Islands will see adjustments to their maritime commutes as Washington State Ferries (WSF) launches a new winter sailing schedule on December 29. This schedule aims to address the changing needs of the growing communities, as reported by the WSDOT.
The upcoming schedule, developed over nearly two years of planning and public input, is the result of a community task force that contributed significantly to the process. The new plan includes daily winter interisland service, supported by a grant from Governor Jay Inslee. This aims to provide a more reliable timetable that improves vessel punctuality and streamlines crewing schedules. The changes address the need for an updated approach, as the previous schedules had remained unchanged for over a decade while the island communities experienced significant growth.
This change, as mentioned in a statement on the WSDOT website, marks the first seasonal schedule set for 2025 and as such, vehicle reservations will be up for grabs starting October 29, ahead of the new arrangement which will take effect by year-end.
With spring and summer schedules scheduled to begin on March 23 and June 15 respectively, residents and travelers can expect to benefit from the new timetables, which will allow for booking openings two months in advance. This collaboration between WSF and various stakeholders aims to ensure that ferry services address the personal, professional, and recreational needs of the island communities.
