The expansion of Greeley-Weld County Airport is officially underway following a recent intergovernmental agreement (IGA) that involves significant funding pledges from Weld County and the City of Greeley. According to Weld County, the planned improvements include a new taxi lane, an additional taxiway, and both a public and an internal access road, aimed to better handle increased air traffic and larger aircraft.
As part of the agreement, Weld County and the City of Greeley are set to each contribute up to $5 million for the developments. These will not only comprise the construction of taxi infrastructure but also of "Wing Way," a new public access road that is to eventually connect to the airport's perimeter. “Given the growth we’re experiencing and what’s anticipated in the coming years, it only makes sense to provide these enhancements,” said Kevin Ross, Weld County Commissioner Chair, as obtained by Weld County
The agreement marks a historic moment as it is the first major financial commitment by the local authorities towards the airport's infrastructure enhancement since the Greeley-Weld Authority Board was established in 1978. "Outside of some accounting services and the donation of a vehicle in the 80s, in 46 years, there have been no big contributions to the airport," said Weld County Attorney Bruce Barker, as reported by Weld County.
Project planning and design are already in the works, with Bolton & Menk assigned as the overall project manager, and Garver Engineering laying out the taxiway and lane. The improvements are expected to start coming to life in the spring of 2025, with a target completion date of August of the same year.
