Commuters and residents in Weld County have reason to celebrate as the Weld County Road (WCR) 22 is now fully open to traffic following significant upgrades and improvements. The project, which stretches from U.S. 85 to WCR 49, is a key component of the region's infrastructure, providing an important haul route for the area northeast of Fort Lupton.
Weld County Commissioner Chair Kevin Ross emphasized the importance of such projects for the local transportation network, as obtained by Weld County, stating, "This road is an important connection between Highway 85 and County Road 49, and we're pleased that with this final stretch, county road 22 has been improved." To successfully manage to handle the expected increase in traffic as the county develops, the Department of Public Works had to overcome to complete the road work ahead of schedule, a feat they accomplished with diligence.
The upgrade included a comprehensive rebuild of the stretch between WCR 31 and WCR 41 back in 2022. Earlier this year, the focus shifted to heaving up the road between U.S. 85 and WCR 31. A complete revamp of the road's structure was undertaken, enhancing its safety, and durability, and preparing it for future demands. Among several improvements, the bridge 22/27A received attention, with significant work done on its driving surface to ensure a smoother ride for all who traverse it.
The area sees substantial daily use, with an estimated 1,807 vehicles traveling it, a figure likely to rise with time. According to Weld County, Curtis Hall, Weld County Public Works Director, indicated the readiness of WCR 22 for the future, saying, "I'm pleased that our team was able to get this project finished well ahead of the October 31st deadline, but even more in our commitment to rebuild county road 22 from county road 49 to Highway 85." These improvements were essential not just for current use but to efficiently accommodate the increasing demand anticipated due to the county's growth.
