Weston Regional Park has begun maintenance work on Rinks 1 and 3, receiving their first resurfacing since 2018. According to a recent Weston official announcement, this is part of an effort to sustain and raise the bar for the community's recreational spaces and services.
The city's parks department is not only resurfacing Rink 3 but also adding new Pickleball lines. This upgrade follows the 2023 Master Plan, shaped by public input. Rink 3 will now accommodate multiple sports, similar to the versatile courts at Indian Trace Park.
Despite the new lines, Rink 3 isn't going all-in on Pickleball. There won't be any permanent fixtures; instead, temporary nets can be put up when the need arises. This approach guarantees that skaters, hockey players, and other athletes can still kick it on the rink with freedom and ease. As for Rink 1, it remains the go-to spot for hockey and skating, untouched by the recent updates.
Questions of fair use and access have floated up in wake of the changes. The City follows a system of instructor agreements to schedule classes while encouraging equitable facility use. Entities interested in offering classes can book the city's facilities after meeting a set of requirements, including proof of insurance and successful background checks. These programs pay back into the system, helping maintain the facilities for everyone, as exemplified by the Pedalyard program that teaches kids to cycle sans training wheels. Yet, when the rinks aren't engaged through these agreements, they are open on a first-come, first-serve basis, ensuring access for all.
Looking down the road, Weston's Parks and Recreation Department remains committed to providing secure, well-maintained, and flexible recreational areas. Their work, orchestrated by the guidelines of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, promises a quality experience for all park-goers.
