Whitehall police, alongside the Allegheny County Bomb Squad, are investigating an incident early this morning involving what seemed to be a vehicle explosion. Residents in the Whitehall area were stirred by the sound of a "loud bang" and subsequent presence of smoke at around 6 a.m. near the 4400 block of E. Barlind Drive. WPXI reported that officials arrived to discover a blue Toyota SUV with shattered windows situated conspicuously in a home's driveway.
In communication with the authorities, the bomb squad attended to a response marked by caution despite the current belief that the blast was an isolated event, posing no broader danger to the public. The windows of a blue Toyota SUV were blown out in the driveway of a home, according to CBS News. No one was reported injured in tandem with the mysterious event.
As the investigation persists, the Allegheny County Fire Marshal has stepped in to determine the cause of the explosion. While few details have surfaced surrounding the specifics of the blast, officials have recurrently emphasized the absence of any ongoing threat. The Whitehall Police Chief, in an interview with CBS News, noted that there was "a lot of smoke in the area when they arrived" and it is believed that "an explosion may have occurred inside the vehicle."
The incident has inadvertently pulled the local community into a short-lived moment of panic, quickly allayed by officials' reassurances. Debris from the vehicle, under examination by the bomb squad, with the haste of a response called in out of an "abundance of caution," as per CBS News reports, continues to be circumspectly probed to understand more about the nature of the explosion. The Chief of Whitehall Police assured that, with nobody found inside the vehicle at the time of the incident, the detonation does not indicate an ongoing risk to residents.
