The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced the closure of the final segment of State Route 542/Mount Baker Highway. The route officially closed for winter on Wednesday, as confirmed by WSDOT's official news release.
FFor those interested in winter sports, the gateway to the mountain remains open up to milepost 54, where routine maintenance and seasonal preparations have been completed. Local WSDOT crews have been working in the area, "repairing guardrail, clearing ditches and removing hazardous trees," in anticipation of the winter months, according to WSDOT. Despite the road's closure, the area still draws visitors. While services such as restrooms and garbage disposal will be limited, the outdoors continues to appeal to those who prefer snowshoes to the freeway.
This limited access is a standard occurrence, with seasonal closures typically taking place from October 15 to November 1. The closure affects the last 2.7 miles of the highway, an area recognized for hazardous driving conditions in winter. WSDOT's decision is based on safety concerns, noting the "narrow, sharp curves and steep slopes" of this alpine route, as per WSDOT.
Meanwhile, as the road remains covered in frost, WSDOT personnel will continue snow and ice removal efforts in the Heather Meadows area to maintain access for those looking to enjoy winter. For those interested in experiencing winter on Mount Baker, WSDOT advises visiting the Glacier Public Service Center, where wilderness permits are available and the latest weather conditions can be obtained.
