The suspect in the brutal murder of Mercedes Vega, a young woman from Tempe found burned in the desert last year, appeared in an Arizona court for the first time on Monday. Sencere Hayes, 22, who was extradited from Tennessee, stands accused of first-degree murder after Vega's body was discovered in a burning vehicle along Interstate 10 in April 2023, according to AZFamily.
In the wake of his extradition, a Maricopa County judge set his bond at $2 million and Hayes is scheduled for a court return on December 4, as reported by Fox 10 Phoenix, the gravity of the charges reflecting the horrific nature of the crime where police say Vega was beaten, shot, and burned before her death.
Before his arrest in connection with Vega's murder, Hayes had a spate of run-ins with the law in Tennessee, including charges of theft, firearm possession, reckless driving, speeding, driving without a license, DUI, and possession of a handgun while under the influence, incidents that occurred after the murder of Vega more than 1,700 miles away, as per AZFamily.
