The National Weather Service in Portland has issued an Air Stagnation Advisory that remains in effect for the Portland and Vancouver areas until 4 PM PST Monday. During this period, calm winds and poor air circulation are expected to contribute to increased air pollution. This can particularly affect those with respiratory conditions.
Residents in the advised regions, including East Clark County Lowlands and the Inner Portland and Vancouver Metro areas, are encouraged to minimize the use of wood-burning devices and avoid outdoor burning. According to the advisory, "Light winds and limited air movement will lead to a period of stagnant air conditions." This could result in the accumulation of air pollutants, impacting air quality over time.
The air stagnation situation is a result of the atmospheric conditions described in a detailed forecast provided by the NWS, with mostly cloudy skies and a gentle calm wind persisting through the beginning of the week. Temperatures are expected to hover in the mid-to-upper 40s, with some clearing anticipated by Monday night.
People with preexisting respiratory illnesses are advised to heed their physician's recommendations and avoid exposure to outdoor air as much as possible, especially "if an Air Quality Alert is in effect for your area," as mentioned in the NWS advisory.
