An officer-involved shooting in Akron has left one man dead following an encounter with police late Thanksgiving night. In a statement obtained by Cleveland19 News, Akron Police detailed that two patrol officers heard gunshots around 11:01 p.m. near East Avenue and Vernon Odom Boulevard while working on a report. Upon investigation, they encountered a male suspect armed with a loaded firearm.
The confrontation swiftly escalated when one of the officers, a five-year veteran of the Akron Police Department, discharged his weapon and struck the man. The officers were quick to administer emergency first aid, attempting to vigorously sustain the man's life until EMS transported him to a nearby hospital, where he subsequently died from his injuries. Both officers have since been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure in such incidents, as stated in reports from FOX8 News.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has assumed the lead on this case, marking the beginning of a thorough review process that will culminate in its submission to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Summit County Grand Jury for further evaluation. Alongside the criminal investigation, the Akron Police Department's Office of Professional Standards and Accountability is also to conduct an internal investigation, as reported by WKYC Studios.
