Tenants of Barnhill Marina in Alameda have recently received favorable judgments from the Alameda County Superior Court and the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in separate cases involving unlawful housing practices and rent control issues. According to the City of Alameda's news release, the Alameda County Superior Court ruled against the marina's owners, Investments-Redwoods LLC and Amarpal Narang, imposing over $335,000 in penalties for various violations, including illegal rent increases and tenant harassment.
Simultaneously, in a decisive ruling reported by Hoodline, the federal court has extended rent control protections to residents of the floating homes, effectively preventing any immediate, unfair rent hikes that could have left many tenants adrift financially. These protections stem from Alameda city ordinances specifically geared to keep housing affordable and accessible notably.
The superior court's ruling also resulted in the appointment of a receiver to take over the management of Barnhill Marina, ensuring that the previous owners, Narang and Valley, would no longer be involved in rent collection or management of the property. City Attorney Yibin Shen, as per the City of Alameda's official website, expressed relief at the judgment, emphasizing the city's commitment to housing stability and legal compliance within the community.
