An incident rattled Eagle Rock on Friday afternoon leading to a standoff between an armed man and the Los Angeles Police Department, ending in the man's hospitalization and his canine's confrontation with a police K9 unit.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the ordeal started when LAPD received a call around 1:40 p.m. about a man, plagued by suicidal thoughts and wielding a firearm, located on the 5000 block of N La Roda Avenue. When authorities arrived, the scene escalated into gunfire as the man shot toward the officers who then returned fire.
CBS Los Angeles detailed that the suspect fled into a residence following the exchange, resulting in another standoff and the subsequent deployment of a SWAT team. The individual surrendered to police after an extended delay, around 3 p.m.
FOX 11 reported a secondary skirmish involving the suspect's French bulldog, which intervened as a police K9 engaged the wounded man who was reluctant to capitulate. An officer intervened, kicking the smaller dog to break up the animal altercation before the individual was finally apprehended.
The Los Angeles Fire Department transported the man to the hospital in stable condition, as per CBS Los Angeles. Investigators later recovered the man's handgun, booking it as evidence. No officers or bystanders sustained injuries during the incident.
