The race to fill the at-large Aurora City Council seat is narrowing, as the Council has chosen three candidates for the final round of interviews: Amsalu Kassaw, Danielle Lammon, and Jonathan McMillan, the trio emerged from a pool whose aspirations are set to be the voices in the chambers of local governance, the Aurora government announced recently. The interviews, scheduled for Dec. 2, at 2:30 p.m., will be a chance for the public to get a glimpse into each candidate's vision and competency, they are accessible via Comcast Cable Channel 8/880, AuroraTV.org, or the AuroraTV streaming app, according to the City of Aurora.
In a step toward transparency and public engagement, the city will host a meet and greet on Dec. 9 at 6 p.m., providing a platform for Aurora citizens to shake hands, exchange words, and share their thoughts directly with Kassaw, Lammon, and McMillan, the event is intended to foster a connection before the crucial appointment happens later in the month and the feedback gathered will be considered by the City Council when they cast their votes for the new at-large member during the Dec. 16 council meeting.
Curiosity surrounds the vacancy following Dustin Zvonek's resignation, leaving a seat to be filled until the first council meeting in December 2025 where the candidates hope to bring diverse perspectives and potentially new direction to the Council's initiatives; the appointed individual will serve out this term before residents hit the polls for the November 2025 Regular Municipal Election.
Qualifications for candidacy include being a registered elector in the city of Aurora, holding U.S. citizenship, being 21 or older as of the date of appointment, a one-year minimum residency in Aurora before appointment, having no employment by the city, and not presently occupying an elective office, these statutory requirements ensure the candidates' eligibility while aiming to reflect the constituents they will serve, the City Clerk's Office can be contacted at 303.739.7094 for additional inquiries or clarification.
