Now in its 35th year, this annual tradition has transcended simple meal-sharing to become a Texan cornerstone of the season's altruistic fabric. On Tuesday, the Palmer Events Center in Downtown Austin played host to a flurry of activity, where the grocery titan served up more than 10,000 meals to locals, according to CBS Austin.
Festive foods like turkey, stuffing, and green beans graced the menu, alongside event-specific delights such as pie, and a commemorative cake, marking three and a half decades of this community Feast of Sharing, "We're here to serve those that maybe couldn't have otherwise a hot Thanksgiving meal," Heidi Anderson, who is at the helm of public affairs for H-E-B Central Texas, told KVUE. Beyond the palate-pleasing offerings, the event also bundled in entertainment, children's activities, and various community resources—including free flu shots until supplies were depleted.
But it wasn't just about food and fun; the event also served to connect individuals with valuable community services and health resources. Signaling a strong partnership between private and public sectors, H-E-B joined forces with CapMetro to ensure community members had access to complimentary rides to and from the gathering. Interested parties could get their hands on one of the coveted one-day passes at participating H-E-B locations around Austin.
The Feast of Sharing extends beyond Austin's city limits too, as part of H-E-B's larger Hunger Relief Program. Over the course of the holiday season, more than 340,000 meals are distributed across 34 cities in both Texas and Mexico, as per the details from CBS Austin. And this community feast would not be possible without the service of over 1,000 volunteers, each contributing to the event's smooth execution—from setting up tables adorned with decorations from local school students, to dishing out meals.
