A brutal attack in Baltimore's Federal Hill has left John Berardi, a resident, with significant and possibly permanent visual impairment. According to CBS News, the attack, which occurred on the night of November 23 while Berardi was returning home with a pizza, escalated when a group of young males, believed to be juveniles, demanded his food and then assaulted him as he attempted to walk away.
"Basically, anything I'm looking directly at is just kind of like a gray square and everything else is pretty cloudy right now," Berardi stated, as per Fox Baltimore report, detailing the extent of his injuries, which include a fractured nose, a hole in his retina, and a torn iris. After a group of young people struck Berardi with a metal pole in a brutal attack, the incident, captured on surveillance cameras, has raised concerns over juvenile crime rates in the city.
Baltimore police, responding to the alleged attack, are currently reviewing surveillance footage that shows the suspects wearing ski masks, one wielding a metal pole. The video footage documents the grave nature of the attack, leaving Berardi with limited vision in his right eye and multiple facial injuries.
Berardi and his fiancée, Chrissy Costill, expressed their shock and concern over the delayed police response, which Berardi stated took approximately 45 minutes, and the broader implications for community safety. "They kind of explained how they are reactionary, how they are spending a lot of their time catching these kids, kids who are doing these things, and they're just getting released the same day back to their parents and nothing is changing," said Berardi in an interview, as detailed by CBS News. In contrast, Baltimore Police spokesperson Lindsey Eldridge claimed officers arrived within 5 minutes.
City officials have highlighted the increase in juvenile crime in Baltimore, which reflects a disturbing trend. A recent incident in Fells Point involved an attempted assault on a woman and several carjackings by juvenile suspects. "We have to hold young people accountable," stated Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan Bates, as reported by CBS News. Bates also noted that juvenile crime arrests have surged by 146% compared to the previous year.
