Two individuals have been confirmed dead following a reported house explosion on Joy Vic Drive in Bethel, Ohio, early this morning. Bethel-Tate Fire Chief Christopher Cooper stated that neighbors began calling 911 around 8:44 a.m., reporting a one-story ranch house aflame, according to a live update from FOX19. Debris from the explosion was widespread enough to affect the surrounding neighborhood.
While crews were making their way to the site, they encountered a "heavy" amount of debris, Chief Cooper relayed to FOX19. In a tragic outcome of the incident, two casualties have been reported. At the same time, another male survivor was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center to be treated for burn injuries. The authorities at the Clermont County Sheriff's Office are working together with the fire department, with local traffic being secured by deputies to aid the fire department's efforts, as Sheriff Steve Leahy elaborated.
The force of the explosion was so considerable that it damaged nearby homes and could be felt by residents in the vicinity. "Roughly 9 o'clock, I was sleeping, got woke by a huge explosion," Derrick Gullett, a neighbor, recounted in an interview with WCPO. He described the chilling scene of witnessing a man with hair still ablaze running from the residence. That same survivor reportedly told Gullett that he had been working on the furnace inside the home when it exploded.
The State Fire Marshal's office is spearheading ongoing investigations to determine the exact cause of the blast. The home, engulfed in flames, was still actively burning when crews arrived but was brought under control within 45 minutes. Chief Cooper mentioned during a WCPO interview that multiple cats had been found at the scene amidst the debris.
The names of the deceased have yet to be released, pending notification of relatives. The area remains active with emergency services, and residents will likely witness a prolonged investigative presence as details continue to emerge in this tragic event. Additional updates are expected as authorities dig deeper into the incident, and WHIO is committed to following this story closely.
