Boulder residents can expect to see smoke on the horizon in upcoming months as the City of Boulder has announced plans to conduct prescribed burns across various locations. The burns, scheduled to take place from the end of 2024 into 2025, will be heavily dependent on suitable weather conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness. According to the City of Boulder, on November 19th, the areas targeted for these controlled fires include several sectors around North Boulder, East Boulder, and Southeast Boulder.
The purpose behind these prescribed ditch burns is to not only improve the health of grassland and forest ecosystems but to also maintain essential agricultural water infrastructure. By burning vegetation in the ditches, the city aims to manage plant growth and halt the spread of invasive weed species. As obtained by the City of Boulder, officials note that “prescribed burning in agricultural ditches removes vegetation from important irrigation infrastructure and helps control plant growth and invasive weed species."
Prescribed burns, while a crucial management tool, are not conducted without thorough planning and preparation. The City collaborates closely with partner agencies, including Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and local fire protection districts, to carefully schedule and execute these burns. Expert firefighters, trained specifically in the techniques of preparing and managing prescribed fires, will oversee the operations. They will also ensure that the fires stay controlled and contained. The teams involved are all certified firefighting staff, highlighting the commitment to safety and precision in these procedures.
Residents living near the affected areas are understandably concerned about the potential risks associated with the burns. However, the city reassures that all measures are taken to minimize any danger or negative impact on the community. To keep locals informed, the city has pledged to send out notifications well in advance of any prescribed burns. In the same news release, the city emphasized the importance of these burns and expressed that the City of Boulder periodically conducts prescribed burns, weather permitting, on open space, agricultural areas, and water ditches to improve open space forest and grassland ecosystem health and maintain agricultural water infrastructure.
