In a somber tribute, the City of Boynton Beach illuminated their water tower in a radiant green, extending support and condolences to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO). This gesture came in the wake of a tragic incident that claimed the lives of two deputies and left another critically injured. Conveyed through the soft glow of the tower, the community's heartache and respect were symbolized, as the night sky bore witness to the city's collective mourning.
The solemn illumination honors the memory of PBSO Corporal Luis Paez and PBSO Deputy Sheriff Ralph "Butch" Waller, who were fatally struck by an SUV as they conducted traffic enforcement. As city lights often flicker with the beat of daily trivialities, this time, the light holds a weight of irreversible loss and profound gratitude. CBS12 reported that Boynton Beach shared, "We will keep Deputy Diaz and all of PBSO in our prayers and will be forever grateful to Corporal Paez and Deputy Waller for their service and sacrifice."
Additionally, Deputy Ignacio "Dan" Diaz, the third officer involved in the catastrophic accident, remains in critical condition as he battles for his life. The community's thoughts and heartfelt pleas for his recovery hang amidst hopes that this beacon of light provides solace to all those suffering from the untimely loss.
Moments of tragedy such as these are ones where words often fall short, and symbols take on the heavy lifting of expressing the inexpressible. The green-lit water tower has become such a symbol within Boynton Beach, acknowledged by the city's Instagram account, which announced the initiative to honor those who have dedicated their lives to the protection of others.
