Bradenton resident Andre Adams, Jr., was handed a 19-year sentence in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington after a federal jury found him guilty of various drug trafficking and firearms offenses on July 17. As per details from a U.S. Attorney's Office release, Adams, a 43-year-old convicted felon, faced charges including possession with intent to distribute significant quantities of cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl, along with possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Investigations into Adams, initiated by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office after a tip from a citizen, uncovered digital payment records and transactions that implicated him in drug sales, where funds were often transferred using coded language. The evidence presented at trial established that tens of thousands of dollars had been transferred to Adams’s finance app, many payments were from individuals grappling with drug addiction. On the fateful day of August 4, 2022, authorities seized drugs, firearms, and cash from Adams's residence and storage unit, revealing a concerning arsenal that included an AK-47 rifle and a loaded handgun, according to the Justice Department’s report.
This is not Adams’s first brush with law enforcement, as he previously served 15 years in state prison for trafficking cocaine. Under federal law, his past convictions bar him from owning firearms or ammunition. Adams’s current charges stem from a collaborative investigation effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Shauna S. Hale taking the reins in prosecution.
The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering cooperation among law enforcement agencies and local communities. Hailed by the Department of Justice on May 26, 2021, the revised strategy aims to build trust in communities, support violence prevention, target enforcement priorities strategically, and measure the tangible outcomes of these efforts.
