The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is once again alight with the flicker of one million LED lights as the annual after-dark spectacle known as Lightscape makes its return. Sparking up the night sky from November 22, 2024, through January 5, 2025, this immersive experience brings artistic installations and a touch of the holidays to visitors of all ages. According to Hyperallergic, the event features both new works and some returning favorites, with artists from 10 countries contributing to the exhibit's broad international flavor.
New to the garden this year is the "Lantern Garden" by Brian Thunder and Mandylights, a collection of 160+ illuminated lanterns dressed across the Osborne lawn. Not to quickly be outdone, the "Winter Cathedral" is back, inviting guests to wade through a glowing tunnel of lights—a firm fan favorite. Singularity, an impressive 26-foot sphere adorned with 6,000 lights, makes its debut this season. Visitors can also expect to see "Butterfly Effect" by Masamichi Shimada & Light Art Collection, one of the newly added pieces that are sure to enchant. A statement obtained by PIX11 describes the setting as having "magic and romance," perfect for a picturesque date night or even a marriage proposal.
While Lightscape is largely a visual treat, the event extends beyond just looking at pretty lights—it offers a space for creating holiday traditions amid nature's backdrop. Adrian Benepe, the president and CEO of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, told PIX11, "It's a great place for people to fall in love." And, it seems many New Yorkers agree, as public figures like Jumaane Williams, New York City Public Advocate, and his wife, India Williams, mentioned they're making Lightscape an annual family tradition.
For adults looking to spice up their visit with a little more than just hot cocoa, 21+ Nights are available on December 12 and 19, featuring mulled wine and hot cocktails for that extra holiday cheer. In a move to inclusively celebrate, Sensory-Friendly Early Entry dates are also available for those with sensory sensitivities. According to the details provided by Hyperallergic, ticket pricing varies with options for Value, Peak, and Off-Peak Entry, ensuring access for a broader audience. Additionally, the Lightscape Family Benefit event is to take place on December 10, aimed at raising funds to support the BBG's youth education programs.
While the lights will dim on January 5, 2025, the memories made here are brightened to last. One visitor, celebrating a birthday on opening night, encapsulated the sentiment perfectly when she told PIX11, "Every year I would see the ads and this year it’s my birthday, so I came." The Lightscape Lodge, another new feature this year, keeps guests warm and offers sustenance as they journey through this illuminated winter wonderland.
