Broward County's Commission has made its picks for the county's leading officials for the upcoming year. Yesterday, Beam Furr, who previously held the vice mayor position, was selected to step up as the new Mayor, while Commissioner Mark Bogen has been chosen to fill Furr's former role as Vice Mayor. The decisions came during the annual reorganization of the commission as per county charter regulations.
Selected to represent the patchwork of diverse Broward communities from Dania Beach to West Park, Furr brings a wealth of experience to the mayoral office, including a stint as Mayor in 2018 and twelve years as a City of Hollywood Commissioner. He was elected to serve District 6 in 2016, according to the county's news release. Assuming the vice mayor role, Bogen, a seasoned attorney with a background in public service, represented District 2 since his election to the Commission in 2015 and served as Broward Mayor in 2019.
Commissioners continue to carve their paths in local governance, with four incumbents re-taking their oaths of office. The county also welcomed Alexandra P. Davis as the fresh face for District 7. Davis, a globetrotter by career, has roots stretching from London to Jamaica, bringing a rich tapestry of experience from her roles across ministries and municipal government entities. "District 7 Swearing In and Acceptance Speech" detailed her multi-national journey, which will no doubt inform her tenure in Broward's political fabric.
Outgoing Mayor Nan H. Rich, now returning to her District 1 seat, reflected on the strides made over the past year. The "State of County is strong," Rich proudly stated during her address, highlighting triumphs in the field of affordable housing—a $20 million boost to the Housing Trust Fund and the approval of more than $28 million in gap funding for housing projects as mentioned in the 2024 "State of the County Address". Rich's accomplishments echoed in the halls of governance, setting a benchmark for her successors, according to the same news release.
