Two men and a woman stood on the sidewalk when a vehicle approached them, and shots were fired from within, hitting all three.
Police said the 20-year-old man received a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, and the 50-year-old man was wounded in the left leg, while the 39-year-old woman was also shot in the left shoulder. They were transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in fair condition. Area One Detectives are currently investigating the case, and no further details have been provided on the suspect or the motive behind the incident.
The evening brought more tragedy to the South Side's East Chatham neighborhood, where a 26-year-old Chicago police officer was fatally shot during a traffic stop around 8 p.m. NBC Chicago reported the event, which happened near Ingleside Avenue and East 82nd Street, escalating quickly as gunfire broke out while officers were approaching the vehicle.
Expressing deep sorrow, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said, during a bleak early morning briefing, "I come to you with a heavy heart because we've lost another police officer who was out working, attempting to protect the city and was tragically taken away from us by gunfire." A second individual inside the vehicle was also struck, died from their injuries, and was found with a handgun, the initial exchange leading the suspect to flee on foot before being captured.
