Commuters in Chicagoland faced an unsettling start to their Thursday morning drives due to two separate wrong-way crashes on major expressways. The first incident, which occurred on Interstate 57 in suburban Will County, resulted in the closure of the highway for several hours, as confirmed by Illinois State Police. A vehicle was reported traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near milepost 333, around 5:02 a.m., leading to a collision with another vehicle. Fortunately, only minor injuries were documented, as reported by NBC Chicago.
The second crash involved two drivers on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) when a vehicle was headed west in the eastbound lanes near Wood Dale Road. Following the collision, both drivers were taken to a local hospital with injuries deemed not to be life-threatening. Traffic disruption ensued with the two left lanes of eastbound I-290 being shuttered for about an hour, but had reopened by 7 a.m., as per information from CBS News.
The circumstances surrounding why both drivers ended up against the flow of traffic are currently undisclosed. Authorities did not reveal any further details on the investigations of the crashes at this time.
Following the accidents, roadways were examined and cleared for travel before the morning rush reached its peak.
