The Cleveland Guardians have solidified their defensive prowess again, with Andrés Giménez and Steven Kwan capturing Rawlings Gold Glove Awards for the third consecutive year. Major League Baseball and the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company unveiled the 2024 award recipients yesterday night, with these two athletes showcasing standout performances in their respective positions. Giménez, a gridiron sentinel at second base, shares this distinction with former Cleveland dynamo Roberto Alomar, as noted by FOX8.
According to the Cleveland19, Giménez topped all American League fielders with 20 Defensive Runs Saved and led the charge among Major League second basemen in total chances with 638, alongside 396 assists and 93 double plays. Kwan snagged fourth place among AL left fielders in Defensive Runs Saved and came in second with nine outfield assists, the numbers underscoring their relentless defensive skill. Their accomplishments mark the first time since the early 2000s that Cleveland teammates have secured Gold Gloves in three straight seasons, a feat previously achieved by the formidable duo of Alomar and Omar Vizquel.
Overt defensive mastery wasn't exclusive to Giménez and Kwan. The Guardians had two other finalists vying for Gold Glove glory—shortstop Brayan Rocchio and third baseman José Ramírez —yet both fell just short of clinching the accolade. Nevertheless, Giménez and Kwan's achievements resonate with a heritage of Cleveland defensive giants. Kwan became the first outfielder since Kenny Lofton to clinch three consecutive awards, a streak the franchise undoubtedly cherishes.
The city and team faithful might be poised for another celebratory wave, with the Platinum Glove winners set to be announced on Friday. Giménez already bagged the Platinum Glove in 2023, as per information by WKYC, and fans are excited to see if either Guardians will add another prestigious award to their growing collection. Meanwhile, Kwan secured his status as an elite outfielder, manifesting in stats that include pacing MLB left fielders with 24 Outs Above Average since 2022.
