Next Monday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will officially open the first stretch of the Chattahoochee RiverLands, a project aimed at enhancing public river access and recreational opportunities.
The initial phase of the RiverLands project, clocking in at 0.6 miles, boasts several features for residents to enjoy. According to Cobb County Government announcement, visitors can look forward to a paved shared-use path, a bridge traversing picturesque wetlands, and an overlook that provides serene views of the Chattahoochee River.
This endeavor signifies the beginnings of a much larger scheme to stitch together 19 cities and seven counties via a network of trails and parks. Spearheading the project's first phase, the Cobb County Department of Transportation worked alongside Cobb PARKS, with Commissioner Monique Sheffield paving the way by securing essential SPLOST funds to the tune of $1 million. As noted by Cobb County Government news release, the Trust for Public Land contributed an extra $470,000, ensuring the project's completion.
In rallying for this new corridor of natural beauty, key local figures such as Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and the Mableton Improvement Coalition have played crucial roles. When fully realized, the Chattahoochee RiverLands will offer access to nature for nearly one million locals and tourists, all enticed by the lure of river activities. According to Cobb County Government, this trail near Discovery Park at the River Line introduces the first availability of public river access in South Cobb County, contributing to the wellbeing and enjoyment of the community it serves.
