The city of Columbus is grappling with the aftermath of a shooting that took the life of 29-year-old Treh D. East. On Sunday morning, Columbus Police were called to the scene in the 3300 block of E. 5th Avenue. There, East was discovered with a gunshot wound, a victim of what was reported as a violent dispute.
East, whose identity was confirmed by next of kin, was swiftly attended to by Columbus Fire medics and transported to a local hospital. However, despite efforts to save him, East was pronounced dead at 06:21 AM. In a statement released by the Columbus Division of Police, it was revealed that the preliminary investigation pointed to an altercation between the victim and the suspect, 30-year-old Awil Salah Mohamed, before the shooting.
Providing a rare twist to such an incident, Mohamed surrendered to officers at a separate location following the shooting. His cooperation with the authorities was noted as he was taken into custody without further incident. The case continues as detectives are piecing together the chronology of events that led to this tragedy.
The Columbus Police Department is actively seeking insights from the community that could assist in their ongoing inquiry. Detective Yoder, accompanied by Detective Pribe, leads the investigation, urging anyone with pertinent information to make contact. "Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Columbus Police Detective Yoder," states the release obtained by the Columbus Division of Police.
