Kennesaw State's football landscape is shaking up after the university announced the departure of its head football coach, Brian Bohannon, yet the story from the coach's perspective tells a different tale. According to a FOX 5 Atlanta report, KSU’s Athletic Director Milton Overton claimed that Bohannon chose to step down, an assertion that Bohannon directly contradicted on social media.
"This morning I was informed directly from AD Overton that he was making a change in leadership, contrary to what’s been reported, I want to be clear that I did not step down from my position as head football coach at Kennesaw State University," Bohannon stated. The clash between the university's and Bohannon's stories has left the situation at Kennesaw State murky, especially as the team grapples with a challenging season boasting a 1-8 record in its first year at the Football Bowl Subdivision, with their sole victory over Liberty, as noted by Atlanta News First.
The former coach’s tenure spanning over a decade saw a highlight of three conference championships in the Football Championships Subdivision before the recent move to FBS and Conference USA. As the university ushers in an interim head coach, Chandler Burks, a former star player and 2018 FCS National Performer of the Year for KSU, the institution is pressing forward with a search for a permanent coaching fixture, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Burks is set to be inducted into the KSU Athletics Hall of Fame, acknowledging his crucial role in the program's rise.
While the discord between the administrative narrative and Bohannon's personal recount leaves questions, Overton is steadfast in shifting the focus to the wellbeing and performance of Kennesaw State's athletes amidst this transition, the team still has home games remaining in the season, "Since we started the football program, I have had the pleasure of coaching and working alongside so many great people, I appreciate your hard work and dedication to this program," Bohannon reflected, his accolades at KSU notwithstanding. Kennesaw State University has yet to respond to Bohannon's allegations of being fired as reported in independent statements from Atlanta News First.
