A man was shot by a Cy-Fair ISD police officer following a vehicle crash and subsequent altercation outside the Cy-Fair ISD Windfern Annex, authorities reported. The incident, which occurred in a parking lot at the intersection of Windfern Rd. and Perry Rd., began when an officer responded to the scene of a car crash. The Cy-Fair officer witnessed a car lose control and crash in the parking lot, prompting an investigation into the incident.
According to KPRC 2, the driver became agitated and attacked the officer. A fight ensued, entrapping the officer in the middle of a dangerous situation. A second individual also arrived at the scene, becoming involved in the melee. A deputy from Harris County Sheriff’s Office, happening to drive by, witnessed the struggle and intervened. Shots were fired during the altercation, resulting in the man being injured and taken to a nearby hospital with expectations of recovery.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that the officer, alongside the deputy, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries as a precaution. The person who arrived in the second vehicle was treated at the scene by EMS officials and was released.
“One of his officers was out patrolling district properties at around 10:30 a.m. when he noticed a crashed-out vehicle in the parking lot of the administration building,” Cy-Fair ISD Police Chief Eric Mendez told KHOU. The officer's attempt to gather information was met with hostility and led to a physical confrontation that escalated when the officer shot the driver. The investigation into the case is being carried out by both the Cy-Fair ISD Police Department and Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Details about the cause of the crash, the driver's motives, and the specifics of the altercation remain under investigation. KPRC 2 has reached out to the district for further commentary but has not yet received a response.
