Playing dodgeball in full firefighting gear has become a unique addition to training. This activity, part of a six-week rookie program, doubles as an air consumption drill, teaching firefighters to manage their air supply by tracking how quickly their tanks deplete, according to the City of Denton Fire Department.
In the second week of training, rookies dodged balls while managing their air supply. If hit, they had to do mountain climbers and air squats to keep moving, building fitness and air management skills. The fun activity hides the tough reality of preparing for the demanding conditions firefighters face.
Rookie programs like this build teamwork while pushing recruits to their physical limits. Denton Fire Department’s creative training reflects modern fitness trends like high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and functional exercises. By dodging balls and managing their breath, future firefighters prepare for emergencies while strengthening bonds that could one day save lives.
