A Detroit man, identified as Joseph Calderon, 45, is now facing a litany of charges following an alleged property break-in in Macomb County and a subsequent police chase involving a stolen vehicle, according to reports by CBS News Detroit and other local news outlets. The incident began in the early hours of Tuesday when Macomb County deputies responded to a report of a break-in at the 41900 block of Irwin Drive in Harrison Township.
Calderon is accused of cutting through a fence to access the property and fleeing in a stolen truck. Deputies, having been notified of his escape in the stolen vehicle, later located Calderon but he refused to stop, prompting the use of stop sticks that resulted in the truck losing a tire, cite information from ClickOnDetroit. Despite a deflated tire, Calderon continued driving until the vehicle became inoperative in a field and he fled on foot.
The pursuit led to Calderon's arrest, with a Macomb County Sheriff's Office K9 unit ultimately finding him hiding under a bush. Recovered at the scene were two electric bicycles, batteries, and tools. During the chase, two deputies sustained minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital. The array of felony charges against Calderon, as detailed by CBS News Detroit, include possession of burglar's tools and third-degree fleeing a police officer.
A video footage of the chase, showed the stolen truck fishtailing through a field before coming to a stop, illustrating the potential danger this incident posed to the local community. "It's crazy a high-speed chase came through this neighborhood, it could have endangered a lot of people," Jeanelle Hall, a local resident whose grandmother lives near the site of the arrest, told WXYZ.
Calderon was arraigned in 41 District Court in Clinton Township with a bond set at $25,000 cash/surety. He remains incarcerated at the Macomb County Jail, facing multiple felony charges such as unlawful driving away, malicious destruction of property, and assaulting, resisting, and obstructing a police officer causing injury.
