In the lead-up to Veterans Day, Douglas County has commenced Operation Green Light for Veterans, to honor the local 27,000 Veterans, who constitute 7.7% of the county's population. This initiative is to illuminate public buildings in green from Nov. 4 to Nov. 11., as reported by Douglas County. The National Association of Counties (NACo) spearheads the operation, aimed at acknowledging the sacrifices of our Veterans and their families, while also bringing attention to the array of challenges they face post-service.

As part of the event, three main buildings in Castle Rock have been lit up in green: the Philip. S Miller Building, Wilcox Street Building, and the Justice Center. The green lighting isn't exclusively for public structures, as the initiative encourages residents, businesses, and other groups to swap a lightbulb at home or work with a green one, whether it be an external display for the public eye, or an interior one to ignite a conversation among acquaintances.

Emphasizing the importance of the recognition, Commissioner George Teal, as per Douglas County, stated, "Operation Green Light is a small way to show appreciation, a small way to show recognition that can sometimes feel like it's lacking for our Veterans." He urged community members to participate in the light change, demonstrating support and appreciation for those who have served.
