A fatal crash on M-140 in South Haven Township has claimed the life of a driver with another being left with serious injuries. According to WWMT, the collision occurred just north of 24th Avenue when a 69-year-old man from Coloma, driving northbound, veered across the central line and collided with a southbound vehicle around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.
The Coloma driver was pronounced dead on the scene. Compounding the tragedy, the other driver needed extrication from their vehicle, an effort requiring the "Jaws of Life" according to WWMT, with the survivor being subsequently hospitalized for treatment of their serious injuries. The names of both drivers have not yet been released to the public as of this reporting. Following the crash, M-140 was closed between 24th Avenue and 20th Avenue but has since been reopened, as reported by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the South Haven Police Department. However, the details about what led to the incident remain scarce.
The authorities called to the scene included South Haven Area Emergency Services, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, Covert Township Police Department, and Michigan State Police—underscoring the gravity of the accident, according to a press release by MLive.
