Eagan, Minnesota is opening a year-long conversation aimed at building an inclusive community and tackling the issues of race and thriving. As reported, the City of Eagan is focusing on the question, "What can each of us do to ensure Eagan is an inclusive community where everyone thrives?". It's an initiative that's bringing people from various backgrounds together to talk about what it means to thrive and how they can collectively overcome barriers to inclusivity.

The series of discussions facilitated by the Finding Human Institute are set to allow residents to comfortably gather and exchange ideas. While some may opt to hold intimate gatherings with friends and neighbors, the city is also hosting larger-scale events like the Spring Summit in April. Here, community members can meet and connect with each other in a more open setting. The city encourages participants to actively engage with the topic, even if it's something as simple as dropping by a community conversations booth at a local coffee shop or festival to share a thought or two.

The focus of these conversations will move from visualizing what it looks like when people thrive to understanding the challenges that prevent this from happening consistently. "We'll work together to determine actions that we can take to reduce those barriers and ensure Eagan is a place where everyone thrives," the City’s initiative reveals.

Eagan's diversity is significant, with nearly one in three residents identifying as people of color and almost half of its children being Black, Indigenous, Latino, or Asian. The voices of the youth are particularly highlighted in this initiative, as high school students will have the chance to shape the discourse at a student summit coming this January. There, they're expected to honestly express perspectives, share stories, and work to develop solutions for collective concerns. The intent is for dialogue to not just occur, but to sow the seeds of understanding and, hopefully, lead to joint action.

Community involvement is key to the success of these conversations. Eagan is effectively inviting residents to learn from each other's varied experiences. "Meaningful community conversations start with a desire to learn from others," according to the City of Eagan, emphasizing the role of shared stories and perspectives in creating an inclusive community. Residents interested in taking part can visit the City’s website to find out how to attend or host an event, volunteer, or join the steering team.
