East Maui is gearing up for an eco-conscious weekend with a metals and electronics recycling event scheduled for December 6 and 7, giving locals a prime opportunity to declutter and responsibly dispose of unwanted items. The County of Maui Environmental Protection & Sustainability Division has announced that residents can drop off a broad range of materials, such as appliances, automobile batteries, tires, and electronics, at the Hāna Recycling Center—located across from the Hāna Landfill on Waikoloa Road—from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on both days, according to the County of Maui.

Accepted items for the event, which are detailed on the County of Maui official communication, include a slew of electronic waste or E-waste—encompassing computers, televisions, printers, and monitors—and various large appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, washers, dryers and more, however, all small machines must be drained of liquids before they are dropped off, commercial drop-offs are strictly not going to be accepted. Other specified items are tires, propane tanks and scrap metal, all part of the county's efforts to foster environmental sustainability and manage waste effectively.

To assist with the offloading of goods, staff from Hammerhead Metals and the Hāna Landfill will be present to help residents remove items from their vehicles. Those looking for further details on large-metal recycling can reach out directly to Hammerhead Metals, while inquiries about electronics recycling can be directed to E-Cycling Maui, and the County of Maui Abandoned Vehicles office is available for information about various recycling initiatives, including the Tow & Scrap program or to report abandoned vehicles, connecting with the Maui Police Department's non-emergency line for immediate reports of such vehicles.

Residents of East Maui should mark their calendars for an additional event set for next year, as the follow-up Hāna recycling event is slated for March 7 and 8, 2025 and this upcoming occasion, much like the one in December, is sure to offer an opportunity for individuals to partake in the collective environmental effort and significantly contribute to the island's sustainability goals.
