A fatal fire broke out in a Hollywood Hills West home on Wednesday afternoon, ending in the tragic loss of an elderly man. As reported by KTLA, the Los Angeles Fire Department received calls about the blaze at approximately 4:45 p.m. and rushed to the scene located at 8551 W. Lookout Mountain Avenue, a site notoriously difficult to access due to its hillside position. Neighbor Jim Moore spotted the smoke and, after calling 911, attempted to tackle the fire himself before "the windows blew out," depicting the ferocity of the flames.
45 firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze in around 33 minutes, according to LAFD's official statement. Upon controlling the fire, they found the deceased man inside the residence. The narrow streets and hillside location seriously challenged the crew's efforts, with Battalion Chief Adam Knabe noting, "It’s set back quite a way from the street, steep set of stairs behind the homes, so access was difficult to get a hose line in place," according to the KTLA interview.
The victim, while not immediately named by officials, was identified by residents as a member of the prominent Rothschild family. ABC7 reported neighbors described the man, Will Rothschild, as a recluse, despite his being nestled among other multi-million-dollar properties in the area. Further details disclosed by ABC7 highlight his lifestyle, surrounded by luxury cars and considerable wealth. Residents expressed their grief, with Jim Moore sharing, "He was a good guy. A good neighbor," as ABC7 recounted.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and remains under investigation, with arson investigators arriving as part of the protocol for incidents involving fatalities. Previous sightings of the homeowner had been scarce, as neighbors mentioned he was elderly and in declining health. "We didn’t really see a lot of him lately because he’s so elderly and I was a little concerned," Moore told KTLA.
No other injuries have been reported from the fire, with the LAFD and local police continuing their inquiry into the circumstances of the fire and the precise cause of death of Mr. Rothschild.
