A grave incident unfolded in Montgomery County this morning as a car plunged into the Schuylkill River, leaving a 77-year-old woman critically injured. The event transpired around 9 a.m. near AFC Fitness at 601 Righter's Ferry Road in the Bala Cynwyd section of Lower Merion Township, as reported by 6abc. Rescuers, including two Lower Merion police officers and a Union Fire Company firefighter, were quick to act, extracting the woman from the water-logged vehicle. The senior was subsequently transported to Lankenau Hospital, where she is currently being treated in critical condition.
The submerged vehicle, identified as a silver SUV, was largely underwater when rescuers arrived. The rescuers were taken to the hospital for evaluation, as suggested by Fox29. Expected to be released today, the first responders showed no hesitation in diving into the Schuylkill River to save a life. An investigation into the cause of the near-tragic incident is ongoing.
According to NBC10, a member of AFC Fitness recalled a shocking scene, describing seeing a gym manager, "He was soaking wet. He had a blanket or something over his shoulders and he just seemed like he just came out of the river." The bystander added, "It's very, I don't know, it's a shock? I don't know. It feels like a movie."
Details surrounding how the vehicle ended up in the river remain scarce. There has been no further update on the condition of the woman who was rescued.
