An officer-involved shooting in Fair Oaks left one suspect dead after a SWAT team confrontation early Thursday morning. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Facebook post, the incident started late Wednesday night when deputies responded to reports of shots fired during an argument between roommates at an apartment on Moraga Drive in Carmichael.
After confirming no one was injured, deputies learned that the armed suspect, a 24-year-old man, had fled the scene with a revolver. Despite a search involving K9 units, a drone team, and other law enforcement agencies, the suspect managed to escape.
The suspect was later found hiding on the roof of an unrelated home in Fair Oaks after midnight. He was identified by the Sheriff's Helicopter and had no connection to the home's residents.
Negotiators attempted to communicate with the suspect, who was surrounded by deputies in armored vehicles. At 3:45 AM, the suspect fired at deputies, leading to a lethal response from three SWAT team members.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division are investigating the incident, as is standard with officer-involved shootings. An independent review will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. The deputies involved are on administrative leave pending the investigation, and the suspect's identity will be released following the coroner's procedures.
