In a bid to secure the integrity of the electoral process, the FBI has initiated a nationwide security operation, with a local command center now established in South Florida, specifically in Miramar, as voters head to the polls. As reported by CBS News Miami, this Miramar hub joins 55 other such centers across the country, all linked to the federal headquarters in Washington, D.C., forming a network monitoring election activities and prepared to respond to any potential threats to the voting system.
Ryan James, an assistant special agent with the FBI in Miami, highlighted the kinds of infractions being monitored, which include "ballot fraud, voter fraud, civil rights violations, campaign finance violations threats to election workers, and cyber security attacks on our election infrastructure," according to a statement obtained by NBC Miami. James Barnacle who is the Deputy Assistant Director at the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division mentioned the importance of all information coordination at the headquarters, underscoring the pivotal role these command centers play in maintaining election security at the national level.
Concurrently, the FBI has been proactive in counteracting disinformation campaigns, one of which involved two false videos that were allegedly disseminated as part of a Russian-backed disinformation effort; one purporting to be an FBI communication on election security, another masquerading as a CBS News report encouraging remote voting due to fictitious terror threats, this development was confirmed by U.S. officials who also clarified that no such warnings have been officially issued. James Barnacle added, "The people in the command post will vet that information and collaborate with headquarters to determine the best course of action based on each specific complaint," which he revealed in an interview with CBS News Miami.
The Miami command post, alongside its counterparts, will remain vigilant not only on Election Day but also through the following day to handle any post-election issues, firmly continuing to request that anyone noticing possible threats or irregular voting activities reach out to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, the agency's efforts are concentrated on opposing any form of interference that may jeopardize the fairness and security of the electoral process.
