A Fort Lauderdale law firm became the center of an FBI investigation after a mysterious substance led to an emergency response today. According to NBC Miami, an employee inside the firm, located on the 200 block of E. Las Olas Boulevard reported feeling ill upon opening an envelope that contained the substance, triggering a quarantine of the office suite.
The situation escalated when Fort Lauderdale Fire Chief Stephen Gollan confirmed that fire rescue crews dispatched multiple trucks to the scene, where paramedics treated a woman who was not subsequently hospitalized; the crews determined that the substance was not harmful and passed the investigation on to federal authorities. Gollan told NBC Miami, "With any type of potential threat or act of terrorism, the FBI is always notified, so any time that a chemical or biological substance may be utilized a notification is immediately made to the FBI and then it's up to them what they want to do with the case."
Firefighters and hazmat personnel arrived around 10 a.m., according to a statement by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue agency spokesman Frank Guzman to The Miami Herald. The FBI's Miami agents took over once the hazmat team concluded the substance posed no threat.
The current status of the FBI's inquiry into the incident remains undeveloped, with officials withholding further particulars; however, the significance of the response exemplifies the standard protocol when facing potential chemical or biological menaces, even as danger failed to manifest in this instance, Guzman conveyed to The Miami Herald. As this is a developing story, more details are expected to be disclosed following the FBI's thorough investigation.
