Owners of suitable locations are encouraged to step forward, with FEMA detailing a clear set of requirements. Properties must previously have been used for multifamily housing and should be capable of housing a significant number of residents at one location. To be considered, these dwellings must also be fixable to meet all regulations within four months, and should be outside of designated floodways, as reported on Pinellas County's official website. FEMA's initiative isn't looking to refurbish singular units for existing tenants, but rather to create available spaces for those who've lost their homes to the forces of nature.
There is also a financial support angle to this program. FEMA's MLR will provide aid for the necessary repairs or improvements, making the proposal more appealing for property owners who might otherwise be hesitant to contribute their assets. This effort underscores the urgency of attending to the basic need for shelter amidst devastating hurricane seasons.
