A fish stocking truck operated by a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) employee overturned yesterday, resulting in an unexpected release of fisheries resources on land instead of in water. According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the accident, occurring around noon near Offut Lake in Thurston County, called for emergency services and clean-up crews to manage the scene.
The WDFW quickly issued a statement describing the event. The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated and then released by EMS on-site. Tow vehicles arrived, making efforts to handle the obstruction and begin the retrieval of the 7,500 fingerling rainbow trout destined for a spring release at the lake. In the spring, these fish would have joined others in Offut Lake's waters as part of a broader strategy to enrich local fisheries.
Despite the mishap, WDFW managed to deliver a separate batch of 2,000 fingerling rainbow trout to Offut Lake today. They have also committed to replacing the trout that were lost during the accident, bolstering local fish populations, and supporting the angling community's expectations for the upcoming recreational fishing season.
