A 72-year-old Florida man, Michael Shapiro of West Palm Beach, voiced a guilty plea for making death threats to members of the Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan Chapter (CAIR-MI), following a series of voicemails that sparked federal charges. Shapiro's threats, left on three separate occasions in December 2023, targeted the organization which advocates on behalf of Muslims in America.
Shapiro, who faced three counts of transmitting threats to interstate commerce, admitted in a federal courtroom to using threatening language because of the "actual and perceived religion and national origin of the people who work at and are assisted by CAIR," as noted in a statement obtained by clickondetroit. On one instance, recorded on December 8, 2023, Shapiro's voicemail said, "I'm going to kill you bastards." This threat was repeated days later with language targeting Muslims specifically.
The case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frances Lee Carlson, highlights the legal repercussions of hate-fueled intimidation. "No one should be able to threaten violence and instill fear on an entire community. Today’s conviction should send a strong message that those who do so will be investigated, identified, and aggressively prosecuted," U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison said in a release, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
The collaboration between federal and local law enforcement was essential to bringing Shapiro's case to a close. "This conviction serves as a powerful demonstration of the serious consequences faced by those who engage in hate-fueled threats, sending a clear warning to others," commented Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson of the FBI Michigan, according to CBS News Detroit. The joint efforts of the FBI and the Canton Police Department focus on addressing bias-motivated violence, aiming to send a clear message that threats based on bigotry will not be tolerated.
In addition to the charge he pled guilty to, Shapiro's court admission acknowledged the prejudicial motives behind his actions. As the threats against CAIR-MI in Canton Township affected the community, federal authorities acted promptly to identify and prosecute the offender.
