These charges are further compounded by misdemeanors tied to his presence and conduct on the restricted grounds of the Capitol.
Williams, a former fifth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft by the Lions, was arrested in Savannah, Georgia, and now finds himself as the first individual to be charged in the aftermath of the Capitol attack since the 2024 election victory of Donald Trump. As reported by WXYZ, the former NFL player allegedly took part in the initial breach of the restricted perimeter and engaged in an assault on officers, including an attempt to dismantle bike racks used as makeshift barriers.
Digging deeper into the events of that day, a criminal complaint reveals that Williams was allegedly captured on video lunging at an officer and was identified after the comparison of screenshots from riot footage with posted social media photos and an official NFL headshot. Williams "lunged at an officer and swatted at the officer's hand,'” details the complaint, per CBS News. The probe into Williams' actions further tied him to the scene through credit card records confirming a purchase in the vicinity of the Capitol on January 6th.
