The Garland Police Department has taken community engagement to a new level with its latest lobby display – a detailed LEGO replica of their police headquarters, complete with municipal courts, a detention center, and a forensics lab. The impressive model is the handiwork of Garland's Detective John Capers, who devoted over 250 hours to assembling more than 33,000 LEGO pieces. According to a Facebook post by the department, the build spanned six months.

Not only did Detective Capers undertake this project out of a passion for creativity, but it also served him as a soothing balm during a turbulent time marked by personal loss. "I knew it'd be fun, but I didn't realize how much it would take my mind off things," Capers stated, as per Garland Police Department's post, reflecting on the period following the passing of his close friend and fellow detective. While working on the LEGO model, a therapeutic escape emerged for Capers during a difficult time.

The intricate LEGO display, which Detective Capers hopes will become a staple for community interaction and a source of comfort for children visiting on field trips or with their parents, is not just a static exhibit. "Sometimes, when families come to speak with us about sensitive matters, kids need a distraction," Capers told the audience through the Garland Police Department’s social media. He believes the display functions on multiple levels, providing relief and engagement.

Residents and visitors are invited to view the LEGO model at the Garland Police Department at 1891 Forest Lane in Garland, Texas. The display is open to the public seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
