The Garland Police Department recently marked the 35th anniversary of the death of Officer Gerald Walker, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in 1989. In a post shared on its official Facebook page, the department paid tribute to Walker's service both in the military and as a police officer. Reflecting on the night of November 15, 1989, the Garland Police described the incident as an encounter with evil that led to the tragic loss of five lives in Dallas, including Walker.
Walker, who served 22 years as a police officer after an eight-year stint in the U.S. military and a tour in Vietnam, was remembered as an "outstanding patrolman, a true professional, a devoted husband, and a loving father." The Facebook post detailed the harrowing events of that Wednesday at 11:15 PM, 35 years ago, when Walker made the "ultimate sacrifice." According to the Garland Police Department, the department's K9 unit played a crucial role, heroically apprehending the suspect to prevent any further harm to officers during a subsequent vehicle pursuit and shootout.
The loss of Officer Walker left an indelible impact on the community, with his family, friends, and fellow police officers feeling the profound absence of a man who dedicated his life to service. "Rest in peace, Sir. We have it from here," the Garland Police Department's post concluded, signifying the continued commitment of the Garland Police to honor Walker's legacy by carrying on his mission of protecting and serving.
